Burlington Township was settled in 1808 and organized in 1817 covering 25,6 miles with one unincorporated community of Homer. The original Plat of Homer was recorded May 1. 1816.
Education in Burlington Township dates back to the late 1800’s with four country schools which were Wright, Lafayette, Union and Mound. Homer School was built in 1909-1910. Throughout the years of population growth and consolidation of the other country schools a larger brick building was constructed in 1950. It has since closed and been demolished and all students now attend the Northridge Public School complex located at 6097 Johnstown-Utica Rd., Johnstown.
Homer Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1951 and provided fire protection for Burlington Township and was run by volunteer community members. Over the years, fire protection also included Miller Township (Knox County) and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was introduced in the late 1990’s. In 2005 a new station was constructed while firefighters and EMT’s remained to be volunteers. Burlington Township joined with Miller Township (Knox County) to form the Homer Fire District in 2023, which has two paid staff members 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and volunteers when needed.
Burlington Township also has Homer Library located at 385 South Street, which its current building was constructed in 1970 with additions throughout the years along with an annex building (the old Homer Fire Department building) for additional use for the community.
